PATIALA: The desire to settle their son abroad has cost a farmers' family of Sarustigarh village Rs 16 lakhs while their son, divorced by their contractual daughter-in-law, has been facing uncertain future in Australia. The Julka police have registered a fraud against the daughter-in-law and her family based in Ludhiana.
The police said that Ranjit Singh, an under-graduate from Sarustigarh, wanted to settle abroad and after reading a matrimonial advertisement of a "IELTS-pass" girl approached her Ludhiana based family with an offer of a contract marriage. The IELTS (International English Language Testing System makes an individual along with his or her spouse eligible to go abroad.
The girl's family, according to the contract, had promised that Manpreet would stay with Ranjit until securing permanent residency for both. The families also agreed that they would not disclose to anyone that it was a contractual marriage, Ranjit's family told the police. Ranjit's family agreed to bear all the expenses of Manpreet for sending her abroad with their son. Ranjit and Manpreet went to Australia in 2008 and Ranjit's family claims that it spent around Rs 14 lakhs for immigration of the couple and later spent another Rs. 2 lakhs for settling them in Australia.
However, Ranjit's family has now gone to the police alleging that Manpreet started threatening their son of a divorce within months of landing abroad.
"Manpreet applied for divorce in an Australian court in 2010, but Ranjit did not appear. The court granted divorce to the couple when Ranjit did not appear in the court despite repeated summons. After their divorce, Dalip Singh father of Ranjit demanded Manpreet's family to return his money as the girl broke away from the contractual marriage before getting permanent residency," said the police investigation officer Narain Singh.
Dalip Singh submitted an evidence of the payment of Rs 16 lakhs to Manpreet's family. The police have registered a fraud case against Manpreet kaur, her father Malkiat Singh, her mother Ranjit Kaur, her brother Harpreet Singh and the wife of her brother, Navjiwan Kaur .
"We have registered a fraud case against Manpreet and her family and started investigations," said the officer. No arrest has been made till the filing of this report.
